Antigua and Barbuda make up one independent island nation that was originally home to several different Amerindian groups. In 1632, Antigua became a colony of Great Britain. It achieved complete independence in 1981.

	Nelson's Dockyard National Park -- Not only is Nelson's Dockyard historical, but it is also a working Georgian dockyard (the only one of its kind in the world today). The park is named for Captain Horatio Nelson of the English navy who was a commander there in 1784.
	Shirley Heights -- Atop a small hill near Nelson's Dockyard National Park is Shirley Heights, an old fort. Steeped in history, the fort also offers a commanding view. Bright blue ocean waters, sandy shores of nearby islands, and amazing sunsets can all be seen from the top. In addition to its historical significance and beauty, Shirley Heights is known for its beer, barbecue, and bands, which provide entertainment and refreshment for visitors.
